Inside Indonesia’s Rattan Supply Chain: From Cirebon Weavers to Your Container

Nearly every serious rattan furniture manufacturer in Indonesia sits at the end of the same corridor: wild cane cut in the forests of Kalimantan, Sulawesi, and Sumatra, cured and graded in regional processing hubs, then trucked to the weaving villages of Cirebon in West Java, where most of the country’s export rattan furniture is actually made. Indonesia produces the majority of the world’s natural rattan, and since the government banned exports of raw and semi-finished cane in late 2011, that material can only leave the country as finished goods. A showroom photo tells you little about where in that chain a chair actually came from, whatever your invoice says.

Where Indonesian rattan actually comes from

Rattan is a spiny climbing palm that grows wild through rainforest canopy, not a plantation crop. Hundreds of species grow across the archipelago; only a handful dominate furniture making:

  • Manau: thick structural cane, typically 25–40 mm in diameter, cut mainly in Sumatra and Kalimantan and used for chair, sofa, and daybed frames.
  • Tohiti: a dense, straight cane from Sulawesi, valued for frames and steam-bent components.
  • Sega: a slimmer, glossy-skinned cane peeled for bindings and decorative wraps.
  • Fitrit (rattan core): the milled inner strand used for most of the visible weaving on finished pieces.

Collectors cut mature canes by hand and sell to village traders, who move it to processing yards historically centered on Palu and on Kalimantan’s river ports, where it is scrubbed, sulfur-fumigated against blue-stain fungus, dried, straightened over heat, and sorted by diameter before sale to Java’s furniture clusters. A 2011 Ministry of Trade regulation stopped raw and semi-finished cane from leaving Indonesia at all, keeping that value-added processing onshore, so the best manau and fitrit grades never leave the country as raw material and Indonesian workshops get first pick of what overseas competitors cannot legally source.

Why Cirebon dominates the weaving stage

Ask ten exporters where their rattan furniture is actually woven and most will name Cirebon regency on the north coast of West Java, specifically the cluster of villages around Tegalwangi in Plumbon district. Weaving there predates independence, and the area works less like a set of factories than one distributed system: frame shops bend manau, home-based weavers wrap components paid by the piece, finishing workshops sand and spray, and consolidator factories take container orders and farm out the work.

That cluster depth lets a workshop scale from twenty pieces a month to a full container without retraining anyone, since every specialist trade sits within a few kilometers. Bali’s role is mostly upstream and downstream of the loom: design, buying offices, quality control, and mixed-container consolidation with teak. Much of the rattan furniture sold in Bali’s retail strips was woven in Cirebon, and an honest supplier says so; our own desk works the same way, design through Bali, volume weaving through vetted Cirebon workshops.

How cane and finished pieces are graded

Grading happens twice: when cured raw cane is sold to workshops, and again when finished furniture is inspected before shipping.

Workshops sort cane into A, B, and C lots on these criteria. Export orders should specify A-grade structural cane by name; tourist-grade production quietly absorbs the B and C material.

Export-quality versus tourist-grade: where the difference hides

The frame is where corners get cut, precisely because weaving covers it up. These are the points of separation:

  • Frame cane. Mature manau or tohiti of specified diameter versus whatever undersized cane is cheap that week.
  • Joinery. Glued, screwed or dowelled joints bound with peel wrap versus pin nails alone, which loosen within a season.
  • Curing. Kiln-dried, fungicide-treated cane at controlled moisture versus quick-dried cane that molds in transit and splits indoors.
  • Weave and finish. Even tension and multiple lacquer coats versus loose weave, glued-down tails, and a single spray that yellows.
  • Hardware. Stainless or coated fixings versus bare mild steel that rust-streaks the cane.

None of this shows up in a photo, which is why our inspections happen at the frame stage, before the weave goes on, and again before loading.
