Marine-Grade Teak vs Household Teak: What Yacht and Phinisi Outfitting Demands

Marine-grade teak and household teak both come from Tectona grandis, but they are not the same material by the time they reach a workshop bench. Marine work calls for quarter-sawn boards, dense heartwood with no sapwood, stabilised moisture, and fastenings and finishes built to survive salt spray, UV, and constant motion. Household teak can be flat-sawn and lacquered, since a dining room never heels over in a swell.

Garden furniture bolted to a deck fails early; marine-spec pieces can be commissioned from the same Indonesian workshops, usually well below European chandlery pricing, if the spec is marine from the start. One Species, Two Standards

Teak’s heartwood carries natural oils and silica that resist rot and decay, which is why it has planked ship decks for over a century. Sapwood, the paler outer band, has little of that oil, so marine spec excludes it entirely; household grades admit some, since lacquer hides the difference indoors. Ask suppliers for SVLK documentation (Indonesia’s timber legality system) and write a heartwood-only, no-sapwood clause into the spec.

Grain, Moisture, and Movement

Flat-sawn boards show broad cathedral grain that cups and wears unevenly outdoors. Quarter-sawing turns the growth rings near-vertical, giving the tight grain boatbuilders specify for decking: it wears evenly and moves less with humidity, though it yields less timber per log, one reason marine stock costs more. Reserve it for cockpit tables; a mix suits joinery below deck.

Household furniture is kiln-dried to 8 to 12 percent moisture for a stable room, but a yacht cycles between humidity, air conditioning, and engine heat within the same hour. Marine joinery needs a stated drying target plus movement built in: floating panels, slotted screw holes, expansion gaps. A rigid tabletop cracks on board; one with movement allowances lasts decades.

Fixing and Fastening

Plain or zinc-plated steel corrodes fast in salt air and stains teak’s grain via its tannins. Marine specification means 316-grade stainless steel or silicon bronze throughout: screws, bolts, hinges, catches, all of it. Furniture should be through-bolted rather than freestanding, fitted with fiddle rails so objects stay put underway, radiused at corners, and drained so water never pools in joints. Adhesives shift from PVA to epoxy or marine polyurethane. None of this shows in a catalogue photo, which is how owners get burned buying household pieces for deck use.

Finishing for Salt and Sun

Household teak is usually film-finished: stained and lacquered for a uniform colour. At sea, film finishes are a maintenance trap, since UV and salt break them down and water lifts the cracked film in sheets. The proven marine routes are simpler: leave teak bare to weather silver-grey, or keep the golden colour with a penetrating sealer reapplied every few months. Teak oil deepens colour but feeds mildew; spar varnish suits protected trim.

What Phinisi Outfitting Adds

The phinisi, Indonesia’s traditional two-masted sailing vessel (building them in Bulukumba was inscribed by UNESCO in 2017 as Intangible Cultural Heritage), runs near-continuous charter guest use on Komodo and Raja Ampat routes, so deck furniture takes wear a private yacht rarely sees. Specify it heavier in section, quarter-sawn, 316-fitted, with a finish the crew can maintain. Commissioning Marine Teak at the Source

Indonesia is one of the few places a vessel owner can commission marine teak directly from the workshops that make it, rather than through layers of overseas distribution. Jepara, on Central Java’s north coast, is a furniture-making centre where several workshops run marine-capable lines alongside household production. We do not own these workshops; our role is matching a brief to the right maker, writing the specification tightly, inspecting before shipment, and managing export. A Minimum Marine Specification

  • Timber: plantation teak, heartwood only, no sapwood, SVLK-documented
  • Sawing: quarter-sawn faces on exterior horizontal surfaces
  • Drying: kiln-dried, target moisture content stated in writing
  • Hardware: 316 stainless steel or silicon bronze, no plated steel anywhere
  • Adhesives: epoxy or marine polyurethane, surfaces solvent-wiped at glue-up
  • Design: fiddle rails, radiused edges, drainage, through-bolt provision, movement allowances
  • Finish: agreed before the build (bare, sealer, oil, or varnish) with matching surface preparation

What Marine Specification Costs

Expect marine specification to add roughly 30 to 60 percent over a similar household piece, driven by quarter-sawn yield, grading rejects, and hardware. Indicative ranges at the source, before freight: a custom deck table from around US$600 to US$2,500; loungers from roughly US$400 to US$1,200 each; saloon joinery quoted per project. These are ranges, not quotes; a firm price needs drawings and a written spec.
