Kiln dried teak furniture should leave the workshop at 8 to 12 percent moisture content for most export destinations, and 6 to 8 percent for a heated home or a dry climate such as the American Southwest, a Scandinavian winter, or a Gulf apartment on air conditioning year-round. Air drying alone, in Indonesia’s humid climate, stalls at roughly 15 to 20 percent: the air is simply too damp for wood to give up more water. Furniture packed that wet shrinks, cracks at the joints, and often arrives musty, explaining the horror stories about teak bought online: the dining top split in January, the tenons rattling after one heating season.
Teak is an oily, dimensionally stable hardwood, one of the best-behaved timbers in our furniture materials guide. The drying decides whether an order survives abroad, and it is the first thing we check in production from Jepara and Bali.
Wood keeps moving toward the humidity around it
Wood is hygroscopic: it absorbs and releases water vapour until its moisture content matches the surrounding air, a balance point called equilibrium moisture content (EMC). Jepara’s coastal air sits around 75 to 85 percent relative humidity most of the year, so wood settles near 15 to 17 percent EMC there. A heated room in Toronto or Oslo in February can drop to 25 to 35 percent relative humidity, an EMC of only 5 to 7 percent, so a sideboard shipped at 16 percent loses nine or ten points of moisture indoors, shrinking unevenly until a glue joint opens or a rigidly fixed top splits. Kiln drying does not waterproof wood; it brings the moisture down to the destination climate before assembly, so shrinkage happens on the workbench, not your dining room.
Moisture content targets by destination
The right target depends on the driest indoor conditions the piece will face, using standard equilibrium data from the timber trade:

Aim for the lower half of the range: the first winter is the harshest test. A workshop that cannot quote a target number at all tells you what you need to know.
What goes wrong when furniture ships too wet
Shrinkage concentrates stress wherever wood cannot move freely: tenons loosen in their sockets, glued panels open, and screwed-down table tops split. None of this is a finishing defect, and teak oil will not reverse it. A container also crosses several climate zones in four to six weeks, and temperature swings condense moisture on its ceiling as so-called container rain; furniture packed at 15 percent carries litres of excess water aboard, and mold produces the musty smell that greets you at the doors. Desiccant bags cannot dry out furniture that shipped wet. Good kiln practice is slow, two to four weeks; “we have a kiln” is not a sufficient answer on its own.
Air drying and kiln drying in Jepara practice
Almost all Jepara timber starts in an air-drying yard, bringing green teak down from 40 or 50 percent to the ambient 15 to 18 percent. Many small workshops stop there, either because kiln capacity is booked out or a buyer pressed for a faster date; the furniture looks identical on the invoice photo, and the difference only shows up abroad. Boards left in an open workshop through the rainy season also drift back toward ambient moisture within weeks. A careful workshop machines soon after the kiln and re-checks components with a meter before packing.
Five questions to ask a workshop before you order
- What moisture content do you dry to for my market? Expect a number without hesitation, such as 8 to 10 percent for Europe.
- Will you show meter readings on my batch before packing? A pin meter pressed into finished components, photographed with the order visible, costs five minutes.
- How long does wood sit between kiln and assembly? Covered, wrapped storage matters most in the rainy season.
- How do you build wide tops to allow for movement? Listen for floating panels or slotted fixings on custom teak dining tables.
- Do you finish all faces, including undersides? A show-face-only seal lets moisture leave unevenly, a recipe for cupping.
Put the number in writing: “moisture content 8–10% at packing, verified by meter with photographic record” turns a vague assurance into a checkable specification.
